Frequently Asked Questions
About AkiliLex
Is AkiliLex a law firm?
No. AkiliLex is a software platform owned and operated by Chuchi Enterprise Limited. It does not provide legal advice, does not represent clients in any matter, and does not engage in the practice of law as defined under the Advocates Act (Cap 16). It is a tool used by licensed legal practitioners and the public to streamline administrative and operational work. See the full Legal Disclaimer.
Who built AkiliLex?
AkiliLex is built by Chuchi Enterprise Limited, a Kenyan technology company based in Vipingo, Kilifi County. The platform was designed in consultation with practising advocates in Kenya to reflect the real workflow of modern legal practice.
Where does the name come from?
Akili is Swahili for intelligence or wisdom. Lex is Latin for law. The name signals the platform's mission: bringing intelligent tooling to the practice of law in Africa.
Templates and Documents
Are the templates ready to file in court?
The 33 document templates supplied with AkiliLex are professionally drafted starting points reflecting general Kenyan legal practice. They are drafting accelerators — not finished documents. Every matter has unique facts that require an advocate's judgment. Have a qualified advocate review any document before filing, signing, or transmitting it.
Can I add my firm's own templates?
Yes. Templates marked "global" are the AkiliLex starter library. Your firm can create unlimited custom templates that are private to your firm.
What does the AkiliLex Seal verify?
The seal confirms only two things: (1) the document was generated through the AkiliLex platform; (2) the date and matter reference for which it was generated. The seal does not certify legal accuracy. Anyone can verify a seal at akililex.com/verify.
Communications
What channels does the Communications module support?
Email (via SMTP), SMS (via Africa's Talking), and WhatsApp (via Meta WhatsApp Business Cloud API). All three channels write to a unified inbox grouped by client and matter.
How does AkiliLex handle DPA Section 30 consent?
The platform includes per-client per-channel opt-in tracking (Granted / Revoked / Pending). Outbound communications check the opt-in status before sending. Your firm is responsible for collecting genuine, informed consent before recording it as Granted. See Data Protection Statement.
Time Tracking and Billing
How does time tracking work?
Each advocate can either log time manually (date, matter, duration, description) or start a one-click timer that runs in the background. Time entries are valued at a configurable hourly rate (matter-specific override, then user default). Unbilled time entries flow automatically into draft fee notes when an invoice is generated from the matter.
Does the platform use the Advocates Remuneration Order?
Yes. Fee note templates include the appropriate ARO 2014 schedules (Schedule VII for High Court litigation, Schedule VIII for subordinate courts, Schedule VI for conveyancing). The actual amounts must still be calculated and entered by the advocate — the platform provides the structure, not the computation.
Data, Security, and Compliance
Where is my data hosted?
In Kenya, in compliance with the localisation principles of the Data Protection Act 2019. Data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and at rest (AES-256).
Who can access my firm's data?
Only the Authorised Users you designate, with role-based permissions you control. AkiliLex personnel access customer data only when strictly necessary for support purposes and only with your express prior consent, with all access logged.
What happens if I cancel?
Your data is retained for 90 days allowing you to re-subscribe or export it via the data export tool. After 90 days it is permanently deleted, save where retention is required by law (e.g. financial records).
Pricing and Trial
Is there a free trial?
Yes — a 7-day free trial with full feature access, no credit card required. To keep your account after the trial you need an active subscription and a verified LSK practising number.
How is pricing structured?
Per-firm monthly fees, not per-user. See the pricing page for tiers.
Can I change plans?
Yes — upgrade or downgrade any time. Changes take effect at the next billing cycle.
